A Practice for Building the Goodness of the Heart in Cosmically Chaotic Times

Updated: Jul 12

I love humanity. I love Mother Earth. I love to be in service to the healing of this world in cosmically chaotic times.

At least once a day, I walk my dog, a Puggle named Loki, in the sweet residential neighborhoods of Del Ray in Alexandria, Virginia where I live. I always greet and smile at passersby. It is one way I acknowledge the goodness that I know is deep within every single human being, no matter their challenges and shadows. Yes, there are people all around the world who are doing terrible things. And it is possible that one or more of my neighbors could be doing or planning harm against someone else or even against a group of people. I live just 10 minutes from Washington, DC. where all kinds of mayhem and chaos can be happening on any given day.

You would think if you knew me that this is what I would be projecting onto or expecting of people. After all, I have spent my life on every level dealing with the topics of trauma and violence. In my personal life, I have spent decades healing my own wounds from a traumatic past due to a mother with narcissistic personality disorder. As an academic, I studied and developed and taught courses on racism, violence and genocide. As a shamanic energy healer, I have listened as clients have shared stories of abuse, abandonment, loss, betrayal, and hardship of all kinds. In that latter capacity, I have used my psychic gifts of seeing, feeling, sensing, and knowing to journey thousands upon thousands of times into the layer of the personal subconscious called in my shamanic practice the Chamber of Wounds where I have been an intuitive witness to all manner of abuses and wrongs that have often reverberated through generations and across lifetimes.

But rather than leaving me in a state of despair, it is the very fact of all this that I remain optimistic and hopeful, trusting and loving. Because every time I gaze deep into the darkness of suffering in whatever form, I always find love-light. I know it is hard to believe, but the adage that there is light at the center of darkness is absolutely true. It is everywhere--even though it may be buried under a mountain of fear, greed, ego illusions, avarice of all kinds, and pain.

This is why I believe a Great Peace is coming to this beautiful place called Earth. It is why I stand firmly in a heart space as I move about the world and acknowledge the spark of sweetness, spirit and soul force within every single one of us. I am them and they are me. I am you and you are me. We are interconnected. And we will only survive these cosmic times of trouble if we forge an attitude of radical goodness.

Radical goodness is the act of always projecting out onto the world and others, as I do when I walk about the city where I live, that they are happy, well, and at peace, and that we are building up the inner fire of goodness in our own hearts. I'm not saying it's always easy. After all, these days with Russia’s war against Ukraine and the looming threat of it escalating into another World War, with the will to authoritarianism around the world--always and ever standing on a foundation of oppression and violence, with the Israel-Palestinian conflict (including the horrific things Hamas did to innocent Israelis and the equally horrible things that Netanyahu is doing to Palestinians), and rapidly deepening climate change, I know most of us are stressed. It is easy to lose hope, easy to decide that human beings are fundamentally violent, and thus to stop trusting life—to stop believing a future of peace is possible. To stop believing in others and ourselves as a species. To shut down our hearts because it hurts. It is scary. And because we are hanging off the edge of a cliff, wondering if we are all going down in flames. So much hangs in the balance during the cosmically chaotic times.

Since childhood, I have always known that things will get better. I have known that my personal destiny line is to be one of hundreds of thousands of people on the planet today that are dreaming into being a Great Peace—a new world—with spiritual practices of healing, peace and compassion. We are the Sacred Activists for Peacemaking.

Now in my early 60s, this conviction has not waned. Indeed, it is precisely because of how many clients come to me seeking out a spiritually informed type of energy medicine that I have faith in a beautiful future. Many share with me that they have begun to realize that there is something more, something deeper and bigger to be tapped as they pursue their healing. They want to heal their trauma, remove the blocks to thriving as creative beings so they can step up to be of service to our challenging world as healers, leaders, conscious entrepreneurs, and more.

My clients and students are part of what is harnessing humanity’s highest destiny line, highest potential. We are becoming more enlightened and, therefore, more unwilling to allow the ghosts of fear, greed, and lust for power to set down roots. My Native American teachers of both North and South America speak of how in this time, with the threat of world war, the intensity and speed of climate change, and chaos in every corner is actually catalyzing the upshifting of our consciousness. The seeds of that momentum were planted in the early 20th century. Since then, the light has been growing.

This is for me not just an intellectual concept or philosophy: it’s a vision, a feeling, a deep knowing. Since childhood, I have felt a pulse of Love-Light in everything. I saw Jesus who told me about that love and love only was his message. His spirit and the loving spirit of the many Cosmic Teachers of Light out of the body keep me focused on the ultimate, most positive outcome for humanity.

So, I want to give you here a way to begin to heal your heart and mind of the wounds of being a victim, witness, passive bystander, or activist as we all stand on the frontlines of violence in many arenas, personal and global. It is a simple practice that you can do quickly, when needed, or if you have time, you can sink down deep into it.

I want you to become quiet for a moment and tune into the goodness in your heart.

Start simple, start here:

  • Put your hands on your heart.

  • Connect with 3 deep in breaths and outbreaths with your own innate goodness, with the soul and spirit within you.

  • Breathe in the Love-Light that is within, through and around All That Is.

  • Breathe out Love-Light as an offering in sacred reciprocity with the Living Cosmos.

  • Feel the presence of loving Guides by whatever name—Jesus, Buddha, Kwan Yin, White Buffalo Calf Woman and others. They are yours.

  • Fill yourself up with all this goodness breath after breath.

  • Keep it going until you feel the rose of your heart open. And even if you don’t--don’t worry, because the more you do this, the more it will happen.

  • Sit in the cosmic truth of goodness. Breathe in and out.

You have now undertaken a conscious and beautiful act of Sacred Activism for Peacemaking. It is as simple as that. Use this practice regularly. When you feel overwhelmed, sad or grieving, put your hands on your heart and do Breath of Love, Breath of Light.

This is a radical act in these times—to choose to focus on goodness when so many are suffering and when anger and fear could easily take over our hearts and minds. It contributes to a higher vibration that is growing and will shift the tide of human consciousness.

Let's go! There's no time to lose!
