Understanding the Light Body: The Luminous Dimension of Being Human

What does it mean to say that a human being has a Light Body?

Across many spiritual and healing traditions, human beings have been understood as more than physical organisms. We are embodied, certainly. We think and feel. We carry histories in our bodies and psyches. But spiritual traditions have also described dimensions of human existence that extend beyond what can ordinarily be perceived through the five senses.

In my own spiritual practice and nearly two decades of work as a shamanic healer and teacher, I have come to understand the Light Body as the luminous dimension of our embodied being: a field of living energy within, through, and around the physical body.

I do not offer the Light Body as a scientific description of human anatomy. It belongs to a spiritual understanding of reality and to traditions of energetic perception and healing. Yet within that framework, it provides an extraordinarily rich way of understanding how we experience ourselves not simply as bodies and personalities, but as souls participating in a much larger field of life.

What Is the Light Body?

The Light Body is an egg-shaped luminous field that surrounds and penetrates into the physical body. At the very center of both the energetic and physical bodies is the Central Channel, a luminous axis running alongside the spinal column, from the base of the spine through the crown of the head. This channel extends downward into the Earth and upward toward the Heavenly Realms.

The Light Body is not separate from the physical body. Nor is it simply an invisible shell surrounding us. It is better understood as an energetic dimension of our embodied existence.

Within the spiritual cosmology that informs my work, everything that exists arises within a living field of energy and consciousness. I call the fundamental creative force moving through this field Love-Light. Love-Light is not merely human affection or positive emotion. It is the generative force of Creation itself—the movement toward life, connection, healing, illumination, and greater wholeness.

The Light Body participates in this larger field.

This is one reason energy healing has been central to many spiritual traditions. When we consciously attend to the Light Body through meditation, prayer, ceremony, shamanic healing, or other forms of spiritual practice, we are working with dimensions of ourselves that ordinarily remain outside conscious awareness.

The Light Body and the Human Energy Field

Different traditions describe the human energy field in different ways. Some speak of chakras, meridians, subtle bodies, luminous fields, or layers of consciousness. These systems should not simply be collapsed into one another; they emerge from distinct traditions and carry their own histories and meanings.

Nevertheless, they share an important insight: human experience cannot always be understood solely through the physical body or the conscious mind.

Within the framework I use in my own shamanic healing practice, the Light Body encompasses dimensions associated with thought, emotion, physical experience, and our deeper relationship with soul and spirit.

Our thoughts and emotions have an energetic quality. Anyone who has entered a room immediately after an argument understands this intuitively: nothing visible may have changed, and yet the atmosphere can feel entirely different. Likewise, we sometimes encounter another person and experience their presence as peaceful, agitated, expansive, guarded, warm, or unsettled before much has been said.

Such experiences do not prove the existence of a Light Body. But they point toward something human beings have observed for a very long time: we experience one another through more than words and visible behavior alone.

The Light Body gives us one spiritual language for approaching that dimension of experience.

The Light Body, Wounding, and Healing

This becomes particularly important in shamanic healing.

Human beings carry the effects of what has happened to us. Some of those effects are readily accessible to conscious memory. Others appear through emotional patterns, bodily responses, beliefs, relationships, dreams, fears, or ways of moving through the world that we may not fully understand.

In the shamanic traditions that have shaped my work, wounding can also leave energetic imprints.

I do not understand this to mean that every illness, emotional difficulty, or painful experience is caused by an energetic blockage. Nor is shamanic healing a substitute for appropriate medical or psychological care. Human suffering has many causes and conditions—physical, psychological, relational, ancestral, social, historical, and spiritual—and responsible healing requires us to honor that complexity.

Energetic healing works within one dimension of that larger reality.

In my healing practice, I have repeatedly observed that when people work intentionally with the energetic dimensions of their experience, something can begin to shift. A person may become aware of grief that has remained buried for years. An old story may lose some of its authority. A deeper sense of self may emerge beneath identities organized around what happened in the past.

This is part of what interests me most about the Light Body. It is not simply an esoteric structure to be mapped. It gives us another way to understand healing as a movement toward greater coherence among body, mind, heart, soul, and spirit.

The Light Body and the Soul

The Light Body also plays an important role in our relationship with the soul.

I understand each human being as an Individualized Soul: a unique expression of the larger field of Creation. We arrive in this life carrying particular gifts, capacities, challenges, relationships, and possibilities. Our lives unfold through an ongoing relationship between our human reality—with all its limitations and unpredictability—and this deeper soul reality.

The Light Body can be understood as one of the places where those realities meet.

Through meditation, contemplation, shamanic journeying, prayer, dreams, ceremony, and other spiritual practices, we can become increasingly receptive to forms of knowing that do not arise primarily through analytical thought. Intuition may become clearer. Patterns in our lives may become more visible. We may begin to recognize what belongs to us and what does not, where we have abandoned ourselves, or where life may be asking something more of us.

This does not mean that every intuition is a message from the soul. Discernment remains essential. Spiritual maturity requires learning to distinguish genuine guidance from fear, wishful thinking, projection, fantasy, and the desires of the ego.

The purpose of cultivating awareness of the Light Body is therefore not to become more spectacularly “spiritual.” It is to become more deeply present to the fullness of who we are.

Working Consciously with the Light Body

You do not need to see auras or perceive energy visually to work with the Light Body.

Some people experience energy through physical sensation: warmth, tingling, pressure, spaciousness, movement, or changes in breathing. Others perceive images, colors, emotions, or intuitive impressions. Still others experience very little that they would identify as energetic sensation.

None of these experiences makes someone more or less spiritually developed.

What matters more is the quality of attention we bring to practice.

A simple Light Body meditation can begin by grounding yourself in the body and the Earth rather than trying to leave ordinary embodied experience behind.

Sit comfortably, allowing your spine to be upright without becoming rigid. Feel the physical contact between your body and the chair or floor beneath you. Take several slow breaths.

Bring your awareness to the center of your body. Imagine, sense, or simply hold the intention that a luminous channel extends from the base of your spine upward through the crown of your head. Then imagine that it continues downward into the Earth and upward toward the Heavenly Realms.

Allow yourself to rest within an egg-shaped field of clear light surrounding and permeating your physical body.

Now bring your attention to your heart.

With each inhalation, imagine Love-Light entering and illuminating the heart. With each exhalation, allow yourself to release whatever you do not need to hold in this moment—not by forcing it away, but by allowing it to loosen.

You may visualize this Love-Light as clear light, golden light, or Rainbow Light. Or you may not visualize anything at all. The image is less important than the intention: to become consciously receptive to the loving, creative field of life while remaining fully present in your body.

Stay with the practice for ten or fifteen minutes.

Then return your attention deliberately to your physical surroundings. Feel your feet. Notice the room. Take a deeper breath. If possible, step outside afterward and feel your connection with the Earth.

From Light Body to Rainbow Body

In some spiritual traditions, particularly Tibetan Buddhist traditions, the term Rainbow Body has a very specific meaning and should not be casually appropriated as another name for feeling energetically radiant.

In my own teaching, Rainbow Light has served as an image and experience of the many frequencies or expressions of Love-Light moving through Creation. I therefore use the language carefully.

The purpose of working with the Light Body is not to achieve a spiritual status or escape the difficulties of being human. If spiritual practice is genuine, it should make us more capable of inhabiting our humanity—not less.

Over time, sustained spiritual practice can deepen compassion. It can expose the places where we remain defended or divided. It can ask us to relinquish identities that once protected us but now constrain us. It can increase our capacity to remain present to suffering without becoming entirely consumed by it.

And, perhaps most importantly, it can change how we participate in the world.

Light Is Not an Escape From Darkness

This distinction matters enormously to me.

When people hear words such as light, Love-Light, or Light Body, it is easy to imagine a spirituality devoted to transcending everything painful, frightening, angry, wounded, or difficult.

That is not what I mean.

Healing does not require us to become creatures of perpetual positivity. Love does not ask us to deny violence, grief, injustice, betrayal, rage, or loss. Sometimes Love comforts. Sometimes Love illuminates what we have been unwilling to see. Sometimes Love requires boundaries. Sometimes it says no.

The Light Body is therefore not a refuge from human reality.

It is one dimension of our capacity to meet that reality from a deeper center.

The more consciously we inhabit our spiritual nature, the more—not less—capable we can become of inhabiting our bodies, relationships, responsibilities, and the world itself. Spiritual illumination that removes us from life is of limited value. The question is what the light enables us to see, what it asks us to heal, and ultimately how it asks us to live.

That is where the Light Body becomes more than an interesting spiritual concept. It becomes part of the lifelong practice of remembering who we are.

Sometimes I look for interesting information, reviews, or expert commentary because someone drops a link in a group—they are genuinely engaging, but sometimes you read through an article and find such useful links neatly woven right inside the text. For example, I recently came across a great overview on platforms like https://www.politolog.net.ua/ and htpps://deribasovskaya.net
